GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Laboratory Assistant will coordinate and perform tasks and activities in several areas of the clinical laboratory including but not limited to performing phlebotomy, specimen processing, and waived laboratory testing .
PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

- *Completes assigned tasks accurately and timely, adhering to all laboratory standards, policies and procedures.
- *Accurately performs computer entry of patient demographic and testing information including specimen data collected by laboratory or other hospital staff.
- *Responsible for specimen receiving and handling for in house and reference laboratory testing, which includes the use of centrifuges.
- *Under the supervision of technical staff, performs waived laboratory testing (i.e. kit testing).
- *Assists with pre-analytical processes to include preparation for various testing.
- *Reviews Outpatient Requisitions for accurate / appropriate laboratory orders.
- Supply and equipment inventory ordering.
- Performs blood specimen collection from medical center inpatients and outpatients.
- Completes all mandatory safety training and follows all safety guidelines per written policies and procedures.
- Assists in training new Phlebotomy and Laboratory Assistant employees.
- Performs other related projects and duties as assigned .
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalency required. At least one year of experience as a phlebotomist required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Must be able to distinguish and discriminate between colors.
