KMCRI-Administration Position Title: Laboratory Manager - Cancer Center (BRCF) Job Family Group: Professional Staff Job Description Summary: The Laboratory Manager will provide support to the Biospecimen Repository Core Facility (BRCF) leadership for all day-to-day activities in two clinical labs as part of the repository. This role is designed to provide support for the clinical lab in any capacity, including hands on efforts to assure proper collection, processing, and banking of human biospecimens and administrative duties and quality improvements. This position will work hand in hand with the Program Director and the Project Manager to ensure open communication and efficient management of BRCF resources and to develop solutions to increase efficiency and improve workflow.The Biospecimen Repository Core Facility (BRCF) plays a vital role to support translational research by its ethical collection, storage, annotation, and distribution of high quality biospecimens, such as frozen solid tumors of varying histology and bodily fluids (blood, urine, ascites fluids). The BRCF also provides expert histopathology support and combines the expertise of pathologists, translational researchers, and technical personnel to produce a comprehensive and focused approach to support the research activities at the University of Kansas Cancer Center.

Job Duties:
Support the BRCF leadership by managing all day-to-day activities in two labs (specimen processing and histology) within the repository. Must have in-depth knowledge of specimen collection, processing, banking, and shipping requirements for scientists within the cancer center and medical center.
Responsible for quality assurance/quality improvement activities related to specimen collection, specimen handling, processing, and shipping, as well as patient preparation and identification.
Support upper management using effective tracking tools to provide consistent and accurate project status. Write and review all active laboratory protocols and laboratory manuals in the BRCF and aid as needed.
Help develop the BRCF into a CLIA-certified/CAP-accredited lab.
Ensure an accurate inventory of laboratory supplies.
Attend and actively participates in BRCF leadership meetings and planning meetings with new users.
Review the lab requirements of prospective studies. Accomplish project goals through effective team leadership.
Maintain all freezers within the BRCF and assign responsibilities to assure 24/7 monitoring.
Maintain the lab maintenance logs.
Supply management duties to include inventory, sourcing, shipping cost, and pass through cost.
Write SOPs and Guidance Documents for the labs to improve quality assurance and create a standard process for lab operation.
Work on special projects as needed.

Required Qualifications:Education :
- Bachelors degree in biology, chemistry, or related disciplines. Experience may substitute for degree on a year for year basis.
Work Experience :
- 3 years experience in a lab setting supporting translational research.
- In-depth specimen handling knowledge as demonstrated by application materials.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education :
Education in human anatomy and physiology.
Work Experience :
3 years lab management with supervision of laboratory staff.
Experience running a CLIA-certified/CAP-accredited lab.
Training in HIPAA and Research Compliance.
Skills :
Organizational, time management and multi-tasking skills.

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
