JOB SUMMARY:

The Jefferson County Department of Health is seeking to hire Medical Laboratory Technicians to perform highly technical clinical laboratory work in one or more of the following laboratory specialties: chemistry, hematology and coagulation, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, and urinalysis. Employees in this job class collect/receive, evaluate, and process a variety of patient specimens to conduct requested laboratory tests on specimens. Work is performed entirely within a clinical laboratory environment, and individuals in this job class require substantial knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures and methods, including safety and infection control protocols. In addition to laboratory analyses, Medical Laboratory Technicians are also responsible for general maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment to ensure the accuracy of analyses.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Laboratory experience with waived or moderate complexity testing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Jefferson County Department of Health. These qualifications may be considered by the Health Department when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

  • Knowledge of analytical laboratory procedures including safety and infection control protocols.

  • Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or Clinical Laboratory Technology.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Ensures laboratory testing equipment is functioning properly prior to performing tests on specimens by troubleshooting problems with equipment, performing regular maintenance, and conducting quality assurance testing.

  • Conducts tests and analyses of control specimens with known values in order to ensure that analyzers and other testing equipment are providing accurate measurements.

  • Troubleshoots analyzers to resolve performance problems such as unacceptable quality controls results and instrument malfunctions.

  • Maintains storage equipment and ensures all lab products and supplies (e.g., specimens, reagents, controls, etc.) are safely and properly stored.

  • Checks temperature of the room, incubators, refrigerator and freezers to ensure they are within acceptable limits.

  • Maintains a current chemical inventory list by documenting amounts and quantities of supplies.

  • Rotates stock according to date to ensure that no supplies expire.

  • Receives, evaluates and processes patient specimens in order to ensure that adequate specimens are collected for analysis.

  • Macroscopically assesses adequacy of specimen, notifying physician if another aspiration should be performed.

  • Processes samples promptly as collected by physician, to include preparing slides and appropriately preserving specimen for biopsies and cultures.

  • Processes specimens by printing and attaching appropriate shipping and/or barcode labels.

  • Receives specimens in lab by verifying patient's information on specimen container matches information on lab order.

  • Performs a variety of laboratory tests on specimens in one or more of the following laboratory specialties: chemistry, hematology and coagulation, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, and urinalysis.

  • Performs immunology or serology testing (e.g., flu testing, RPR testing, H.pylori testing, etc.) according to lab order.

  • Performs microscopic examinations of urine samples and urinalysis (testing for bacteria, pH testing, etc.) to assist doctor is diagnosing patient and/or develop appropriate treatment plan.

  • Analyzes test results according to lab order using various procedures in to order to assist doctor in diagnosing patient.

  • Follows Alabama Department of Health regulations by reporting all communicable/infectious diseases to State Health Department.

  • Adheres to regulations set by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) regarding clinical laboratory practices and procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily within medical or healthcare facilities. Work involves use of medical laboratory tools and equipment necessary for the care and/or diagnosis of healthcare patients. Job may require exposure to bio-hazard materials (i.e., items infected with blood borne pathogens, body fluids, and communicable diseases).
