The Position:
This role supports the science departmentfaculty by preparing labs, maintaining inventory of equipment and materials,preparing course materials, and assisting in the classroom. The successfulcandidate will also support students by providing supervision, instruction andassistance inside and outside of regular class, as needed. In addition, therole will entail the maintenance of chemical inventory records, a focus onlaboratory safety, the transport of dangerous goods and other types of waste.Regular professional development will be provided to meet changing program andequipment requirements.
Specific Accountabilities:
Laboratory Safety and Supplies
- Research, prepare and set-up all labs asper outlines submitted by science faculty.
- Ensure MSDS sheets are up-to-date andthat WHMIS requirements are followed.
- Ensure maintenance of labequipment.
- Conduct regular inventoryof chemicals, equipment and materials using PARATOX in collaboration with theColleges Risk Manager.
- Order, receive and restock lab chemicalsand equipment.
- When necessary, obtain materials from local storesfor lab work.
- Follow upwith suppliers with respect to potential shortages and/or delays.
- Order,receive and restock office supplies, as necessary.
- Monitor maintenance requests, such asbroken stools, drawers and faulty equipment.
- Monitor science department inventory ofchemicals, equipment and materials and order, receive and restock, asnecessary; maintain accurate records.
- Ensure proper collection and storage ofchemical waste according to RPRA Environmental guidelines.
- Work with the schools Risk Management Director on the Health and Safety Committee to ensure theColleges compliance.
Technology Support
- Liaise with company representatives toensure software and equipment is up-to-date.
- Troubleshootwith outside representatives when necessary.
- Share innovative initiatives usingtechnology in the classroom.
- Support the use of technology in theclassroom, planning and implementation of new curriculum through research,including improving personal proficiency to do so through professionaldevelopment, as program changes are implemented.
Department Budget
- Maintain and monitor the ScienceDepartment budget and review throughout the year with the department head.
Classroom Contributions
- Prepare, set up and clean lab equipment; assist to prepare class materials.
- Assist teachers and students during labactivities, when possible.
- Provide supplemental informationpertaining to lab activities and curriculum to department members.
- Research and suggestnew lab activities.
Co-Curricular
- Contribute tothe schools co-curricular program through support of the club program.
Cross Department Collaboration
- Supportcross department collaborative projects.
- Keepabreast of current developments in biology, physics, chemistry and earth &space areas of the curriculum.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
- Sciencedegree or related post-secondary education.
- Diplomain Chemistry Laboratory Technology is considered an asset.
- Self-starter,able to work in a self-directed manner appropriate to changing needs.
- Highattention to detail.
- Approachable,collaborative with strong interpersonal skills and an ability to interact wellwith students, teachers, and other colleagues.
- Abilityto support teaching faculty with the planning of curriculum.
- Understandingof safety requirements in the science classroom.
- Strongtechnology and research skills.
- WHMIScertification, First Aid certification, and TDGA (Transport of Dangerous GoodsAct) training are beneficial.
