Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in any physical or applied science (physics, engineering, etc.). In lieu of a Bachelor's degree, an Associate Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in any physical science and two (2) years of related full-time work experience may be considered. Two (2) years of related full-time work experience (including time as a graduate student or similar). Experience with maintenance and/or repair of experimental or industrial equipment. Computer skills, i.e. experience in basic office software, maintenance of personal computer systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in any physical or applied science field. Additional years of related full-time experience. Experience in an academic research or instructional laboratory environment. Experience using any type of acquisition software such as LabView, MATLAB, QuickDAQ, DASYIab; Vernier Loggerpro.

Brief Description of Duties:

Assist in the maintenance and management of the instructional laboratories in Physics and Astronomy, including the senior instructional labs and studio. This is done in close collaboration with the Manager of Instructional Laboratories to whom the incumbent directly reports. Secondary supervisor is the Director of Physical Laboratories. Serves as backup for the Manager of instructional laboratories. The position is responsible for maintenance, repair, upgrade and support of all undergraduate physics and astronomy laboratory course equipment as well for the computer systems used in the lab environment.

Duties:

  • Aid the manager of instructional laboratories to maintain and support lower division Physics and astronomy labs with respect to weekly setup and dismantling. This position assists in managing a staff of undergraduate work/study students to provide logistical support for apparatus and equipment. The incumbent is responsible for repairing and upgrading undergraduate laboratory equipment and apparatus and equipment and, working with the supervisor, maintains all undergraduate and graduate computer systems.
  • Help manage the daily operations of the physics department upper division Laboratories. This includes the maintenance, repair, calibration, and support of laboratory equipment and assisting faculty in the design, development and upgrade of upper division laboratory equipment.
  • Help manage the studio introductory labs. Key components are managing the Teaching Assistants (TA) assigned to these courses and serving as technical support for students for any questions related to the lab equipment and data acquisition software.
  • Consult with faculty and laboratory manager to assist with the design, development and fabrication of new lecture demonstration equipment to enhance the teaching of the physical sciences. The incumbent manages and expands computerized inventory control of all lecture demonstration equipment.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non-Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
