Overview: As a Laboratory Assistant, you will be responsible for performing routine laboratory tasks to ensure the smooth and accurate processing of patient specimens. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to develop your skills in specimen handling, equipment maintenance, and laboratory support functions within a well-established clinical setting. Responsibilities: Receive, sort, and process patient specimens with care and attention to detail. Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment to ensure optimal functioning. Centrifuge specimens, prepare and label samples, and record critical data such as temperature logs. Assist in preparing reagents, media, and specimens at workstations, including aliquoting samples and checking for abnormalities like clots or fibrin. Inoculate slides, prepare specimens for testing, and build worklists as necessary. Execute QA/QC procedures, resolve pending specimen lists, and locate missing samples to guarantee specimen integrity. Maintain a clean and safe work environment by decontaminating work areas, changing gas cylinders, and disposing of biohazardous waste per safety regulations. Conduct weekly radioactive wipe tests in compliance with safety protocols. Operate laboratory computer systems and other PCs for data entry, specimen tracking, and recordkeeping. File and organize department records meticulously to ensure easy retrieval of information. Follow all PPE and safety requirements, including biohazard handling and biohazard waste disposal. Complete all mandatory training and competency assessments to ensure compliance and safety standards. Required Skills: Strong attention to detail and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks efficiently. Ability to establish and prioritize work tasks effectively to meet deadlines. Basic knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and PPE requirements. Proficiency with laboratory computer systems and general PC operation. Good communication skills to interact courteously with team members and external contacts. Ability to retain procedural information and adapt quickly to new processes. Physical ability to perform tasks involving specimen handling and equipment operation, including bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods. Nice to Have Skills: Prior experience with specimen processing, lab equipment maintenance, or quality control procedures. Familiarity with radioactive material handling and weekly wipe testing protocols. Experience with reagent preparation and media inoculation techniques.
