Job Description

This phlebotomist role focuses on performing blood draws and other specimen collections while supporting a high-volume, fast-paced clinical environment. The position involves troubleshooting collection issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements to ensure accurate, efficient, and safe specimen handling from collection through transport.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws and other specimen collections, including venipuncture and use of straight and butterfly needles, in accordance with established procedures.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes (such as urine or fecal samples) to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Collect and store specimens following established protocols to maintain specimen integrity and quality.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate patient and test identification.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
  • Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the order or script to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport, following required procedures to maintain appropriate temperature and integrity.
  • Place samples in the correct collection containers or tubes and accurately label them according to protocol.
  • Understand and fully interpret physicians orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements.
  • Update patient information accurately in electronic medical records and laboratory systems.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to maintain a safe and compliant work area.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.
  • Attend and complete annual departmental trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow.
  • Contribute to training efforts and make recommendations to improve workflow and efficiency in the lab or clinical setting.
Essential Skills
  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 24 years of overall work experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform blood draws and venipuncture using different gauges and phlebotomy techniques.
  • Experience with specimen collection, including blood and other sample types, and proper handling procedures.
  • Ability to accurately enter data in different electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate labeling, matching of requisitions, and verification of orders.
  • Excellent customer service skills to interact professionally with a high volume of patients.
  • Knowledge of safety and regulatory requirements, including OSHA and DEP regulations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working as a phlebotomy technician or medical assistant with phlebotomy responsibilities.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with a high daily patient volume.
  • Strong communication skills to explain procedures and respond to patient and provider inquiries.
  • Ability to troubleshoot collection and workflow issues and suggest process improvements.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and departmental education.
Work Environment

This role is based in a fast-paced clinical facility structured similarly to an emergency room, with over 100 patients passing through daily. The position follows a schedule of Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with every other Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. You will work with electronic medical records, Microsoft Office applications, and standard phlebotomy equipment such as straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen transport systems. The environment emphasizes safety, adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, and accurate handling of specimens. The dress code aligns with a professional clinical setting, requiring appropriate healthcare attire suitable for direct patient interaction and laboratory work.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Albany, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
