What will you be doing in this role?
Under general supervision, the Certified Phlebotomist performs blood collection procedures, including venipuncture, skin puncture and special collection procedures. Responsibilities include accurately collecting, labeling, receiving, and distributing laboratory specimens, maintaining records, and ensuring specimen integrity. Performs all duties with attention to safety, quality, and sensitivity to the age and developmental needs of the patient population(s) served.
- Performs a wide range of phlebotomy procedures including venipuncture, capillary puncture, and special collection procedures; and uses proper technique in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Maintains phlebotomy trays, carts, and collection areas in clean, sanitary, and properly stocked conditions.
- Accurately logs specimen collection information in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) or designated logs. Performs pre-analytical specimen processes.
- Collects, transports, labels and distributes patient specimens while maintaining specimen integrity and proper handling procedures.
- Performs routine operational and support duties such as stocking supplies, discarding expired materials, and maintaining organized work areas.
- Verifies specimen identification, assesses appropriateness of test orders and quality of specimen by recognizing factors that affect procedures and results; and takes appropriate action when corrections are indicated.
- Identifies patients and patient samples by strict adherence to established procedures and use of two patient identifiers; and labels samples accurately and completely.
- Attends to routine administrative functions including recordkeeping, completion of requisitions, and maintenance of collection documentation.
