Work Environment

This role is based in an inpatient hospital environment with a focus on specimen processing and high-volume phlebotomy. There are multiple openings, and the position primarily covers PM (evening) shifts but requires flexibility to work AM and NOC shifts as needed. The main locations include Murrieta, Moreno Valley (Iris), and Riverside, with a weekly rotation pattern: one week at Murrieta, one week at Iris, and one week at Riverside. Typical shift times in Murrieta are approximately 1:00 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. or 10:00 p.m., and in Riverside shifts may start around 1:00 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. The schedule aims to provide at least 30 hours per week after the training period, though there is potential for split shifts or occasional cancellations up to two hours before a scheduled shift due to union agreements and staffing dynamics. Many available shifts arise from same-day call-outs, and supervisors and schedulers contact phlebotomists to offer these shifts. The role is per diem/on-call, with a requirement to be flexible across 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts and to be comfortable working weekends and holidays. The facility will try to rotate weekends to provide every other weekend off when possible, while still requiring comfort with on-call work. Training occurs on 1st shift, Monday through Friday, at one primary location for the first few weeks, with an estimated training duration of 23 months while scheduled for full-time hours. After training, phlebotomists primarily work at hospital locations in Riverside and Moreno Valley, with opportunities to pick up shifts at additional locations, including medical office buildings, to increase hours. The work environment emphasizes safety, compliance, and high-quality patient care, supported by benefits such as access to employee programs, care roadmaps, and online learning platforms. The dress code requires scrubs, and the culture values flexibility, teamwork, and professional development in a union-influenced scheduling environment.
