Job Description:

A Brief Overview

Assists in cesarean section procedures under the supervision of physicians, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel. Responsible for creating and maintaining the sterile field. Prepare the operating room by collecting needed supplies and equipment. Functions within the sterile field by passing instruments and other supplies to surgeons and providing visualization through retraction. Provides high quality care to obstetric surgical patients. Provides basic patient care under the direction of a licensed nurse. Provides high quality care to the following patient populations: Adult, Medical/Surgical, Neonate, Infant, Toddler, School Age, Adolescent, Adults, Adolescent, and Women and Family. Duties are included but are not limited to those below for specified units. Perform Bedside shift report at the beginning of shift, end of shift, and with each transition in care. Utilize policies and procedures to keep patients safe. Is cost conscious in use of equipment and supplies. Adhere to safety practices for own personal protection, i.e. infection control devices, lifts, eye shields, gloves. Demonstrate accurate keyboarding proficiency and computer navigation skills. Demonstrate knowledge of basic math to calculate intake and output. Set up equipment such as oxygen, portable x-ray machines, and overhead irrigation bottles.

What you will do

  • Active participation in surgical consciousness.
  • Assure each operating room has the correct case cart, supplies, equipment and instrumentation according to individual provider preferences.
  • Monitor and maintain a proper sterile field during surgical procedures.
  • Prepares surgical instrumentation that will be used during procedures and assures proper assembly and function.
  • Count sponges, needles, and instruments before and after operation.
  • Pass surgical instruments and supplies to surgeons and surgeons' assistants. Hold retractors and cut sutures, and perform other tasks as directed by surgeon during operation.
  • Monitor and continually assess operating room conditions, including patient and surgical team needs.
  • Prepare dressings and apply or assist with their application following surgery.
  • Participates in room turnover.
  • Answer patients' call lights in a timely manner and addresses request or reports to co-worker to fulfill the request.
  • Perform activities of daily living (ADLs).
  • Collect and correctly label specimens, such as urine, feces, or sputum. Deliver to the lab.
  • Observe patients' conditions, such as measuring and recording intake and output and vital signs; report changes to professional staff in a timely manner.
  • Proactively monitors patients for safety and communicates to licensed nurse the need for any monitoring devices (alarms).
  • Consistently uses patient safety devices.
  • Document activities performed in the medical record in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Perform blood glucose monitoring and report abnormal results to licensed nurse in a timely manner.
  • Greet visitors and callers to ascertain purpose of visit or call, and direct them to appropriate staff.
  • Facilitate admissions, discharges and transfers in collaboration with other staff.
  • Operate office equipment such as: nurse call, fax, scanners, photocopier, computer system, telephone system, telemetry.

Qualifications

  • H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Required
  • Health care experience within the last five years Preferred
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ensures competency and comprehension of all regularory standards.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote safety and security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and company.
  • Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.

Perform skin assessment and reports abnormal results to licensed nurse in a timely manner. Perform activities of daily living (ADLs). Maintain clean patient rooms and changes linens, as appropriate. Collect and correctly label specimens, such as urine, feces, or sputum. Deliver messages, documents, and specimens. Feed patients who are unable to feed themselves. Observe patients' conditions, such as measuring and recording intake and output and vital signs, report changes to professional staff in a timely manner. Maintain inventory of supplies based on unit routine. Provide patients with help walking, exercising, and moving in and out of bed. Transport patients to treatment units, using a wheelchair or stretcher. Turn and reposition patients, alone or with assistance, to prevent pressure ulcers. Proactively monitors patients for safety and communicates to licensed nurse the need for any monitoring devices (alarms). Consistently uses patient safety devices. Document activities performed in the medical record in an accurate and timely manner. Perform blood glucose monitoring and report abnormal results to licensed nurse in a timely manner. Perform quality monitoring as directed: BGM, etc. Greet visitors and callers to ascertain purpose of visit or call, and direct them to appropriate staff. Facilitate admissions, discharges and transfers in collaboration with other staff. Assemble, clean sheet, and tear down medical records. Operate office equipment such as: nurse call, fax, scanners, photocopier, computer system, telephone system, telemetry. Accurate and timely order entry. Perform various clerical and administrative functions, such as ordering and maintaining an inventory of supplies. Perform quality checks on equipment, i.e. crash cart, transport monitor.Generate accurate patient charges.Perform hearing screens for newborns.Adhere to safety practices for personal protection, including infection control devices, eye shields, and gloves.Demonstrate knowledge of regulatory standards.All other duties as assigned.
  • Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 Days
  • Child Abuse Iowa Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 Days
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support & First Aid - American Heart Association within 60 Days Required
  • Certified Nursing Assistant within 120 Days
  • Certified Surgical Technician Preferred

Qualifications:

Required: Graduate of a certified surgical technologist program or hospital trained through a formal education program

Completion of C.N.A. course (or complete within four months of hire date)

Health care experience within the last five years preferred
