Forensic Evidence Technician (Medical Examiner)

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED. Six months experience in handling the chain of custody of physical evidence or completion of college coursework in evidence and criminal procedures. One year experience handling deceased human remains. Must maintain a valid Florida driver's license with fewer than 4 points to remain qualified for employment. Must be able to lift 75 pounds. Must be willing to submit to periodic drug and alcohol testing. Must be willing to comply with immunization requirements and safety procedures.

Recruitment Notes

This position is in the Forensic Evidence Recovery Unit of the Medical Examiner's Department. The Forensic Evidence Technician plays an active role in the transportation of human remains from various death locations and assists the Medical Examiner at scenes.

This position is responsible for the internal and external processing and triaging of human remains from homicides, traffic accidents, home deaths, and other cases under the Medical Examiner's jurisdiction. Duties include processing x-rays, fingerprinting, photographing unclassified scenes, collecting medications and evidence related to the death from the scene, and operating body stretchers.

Additional responsibilities include collecting specimens from hospital laboratories, obtaining charts and medical records, releasing bodies to funeral homes, receiving death reports from law enforcement agencies and hospitals, transporting cases for the Indigent Cremation Services program, shelving and repositioning decedents in coolers to optimize space, lifting and maneuvering decedents with an average weight of 175 lbs., and tolerating odors and challenging outdoor environments while retrieving bodies. This position also involves working with various on-call Medical Examiner doctors as needed.
