Phlebotomist / Laboratory Assistant

Under the direction of the Director of Laborory Services, Laborory Manager, and Laborory Supervisor. Receives pients, correctly identifies pients, collects specimens from pients, transports specimens, performs clerical functions, and assists technical personnel with assigned non-technical tasks.

• Obtains blood specimens by skin puncture (capillary) or venipuncture using approprie technique and maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relion to the test performed according to laborory policy and procedure.
• Instructs pients in collection of urine, sputum, stool specimens. Accepts these specimens from pients and verifies labeling is complete and accure.
• Follows correct pient identificion procedures. (SPP069, LAI803, LAI805, LAI806) - verbally asks pient to ste name & de of birth and verifies informion given against scripts, labels, and wrist bands.
• Greets pients, introduces self, and explains specific procedures. Parent, guardian or caretaker accompanying pient are also greeted and procedures also explained to them.
• Specimen labeling is complete and accure. Correct specimens and tests are drawn and collected. Tubes are filled to correct levels.
• Carts and phlebotomy areas are adequely stocked and kept ne and orderly. Carts are disinfected the end of each shift. Cleaning and restocking is documented, following LAI275.
• Performs clerical/receptionist functions: result reporting, fax machine, filing, specimen processing.
• As assigned, prepares specimens for testing according to procedure. Distributes samples to approprie areas and brings emergency and time requests to the immedie tention of approprie personnel.
• Utilizes computer to register pients, order tests, and print barcodes. Informion is complete and accure.

• Valid driver's license
