Job Summary:
The Patient Care Tech II integrates responsibilities from Medical Assisting and Phlebotomy and patient support functions to ensure efficient workflow, quality patient care, and seamless clinical operations in a fast-paced Urgent Care environment. The ideal candidate is a proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple tasks while maintaining a compassionate, patient-focused approach.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical and Patient Care:
- Greet and triage patients upon arrival, obtaining vital signs, medical history, and chief complaints to facilitate provider evaluation.
- Assist providers with examinations, minor procedures, wound care, and splinting as needed.
- Administer injections, medications, vaccines, and nebulizer treatments under provider supervision.
- Perform point-of-care testing (POCT) including strep, flu, COVID-19, urinalysis, and glucose checks.
- Conduct EKGs and other diagnostic tests as directed by the provider.
- Educate patients on procedures, treatments, and post-care instructions.
- Ensure patient comfort and safety while maintaining confidentiality per HIPAA regulations.
Phlebotomy & Laboratory Duties:
- Perform phlebotomy procedures with strict attention to patient identification and specimen labeling protocols.
- Process and prepare lab specimens for in-house and reference lab testing.
- Enter and release patient orders in the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
- Maintain compliance with bloodborne pathogen protocols and infection control policies.
- Monitor and report any equipment malfunctions.
- Assist in maintaining Urgent Care laboratory inventory and supplies.
Administrative & Compliance Responsibilities:
- Accurately document patient history, procedures, and treatments in electronic health records (EHR).
- Assist with patient check-in, insurance verification, and copay collection as needed.
- Collaborate with Urgent Care providers and staff to ensure smooth clinic operations during high-volume periods.
- Manage medical supply inventory to ensure availability of necessary items.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, adhering to OSHA and other safety regulations.
- Assist in training and orienting new employees or students in department functions.
Qualifications:
- Experience working in an Urgent Care, emergency, or high-volume outpatient setting preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a patient-centered approach.
- Ability to multitask across clinical and laboratory responsibilities.
- Experience with EHR systems and LIS software.
- Ability to work evening, weekends, and rotating shifts as required for Urgent Care operations.
- Willingness to travel between Urgent Care locations with reliable transportation.
- Ability to function in a fast-paced, high-stress environment while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.
Education:
- High School diploma or GED required
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or EMT certification preferred
- Phlebotomy certification (AMT, ASCP, NCA, or equivalent) preferred
