Join the Surgical Services team at Hilo Benioff Medical Center and support safe, high-quality patient care. This position plays an important role in the Sterile Processing Unit by assisting with the cleaning, decontamination, inspection, sterilization, and preparation of surgical instruments and equipment used in patient procedures. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, team-focused, and committed to maintaining the highest standards of infection prevention and patient safety.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Receive, sort, record, and decontaminate surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies using proper PPE and manufacturer instructions for use (IFU).
Manually clean instruments and assist Sterile Processing Technicians with sterilization processes including autoclaving, washer/disinfector operation, and chemical sterilization.
Inspect surgical instruments for cleanliness, damage, alignment, and functionality; assemble instrument trays and prepare items for sterilization.
Assemble, wrap, peel pack, store, and distribute sterile instruments and procedure trays according to departmental standards and count sheets.
Maintain biological control records, assist with sterilization testing procedures, and monitor supply recalls as required.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while adhering to all infection control, safety, and confidentiality policies.
Education, Experience, Certification & Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Entry level: No prior experience required.
Full performance level: One (1) year of experience in a surgical setting, central supply, sterile processing, or related environment involving decontamination and sterilization of surgical instruments preferred.
Graduation from a nationally certified Operating Room Technician or Surgical Technician training program may substitute for required experience.
Knowledge of aseptic technique, sterilization procedures, surgical instruments, and infection control practices preferred.
Ability to communicate effectively in English, follow oral and written instructions, work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, and maintain strict confidentiality.
