The Reno Fire Department Paramedic will operate as a non-fire suppression position under the departments Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Division. The ideal candidate in this position will provide EMS services including medical assessments, primary and advanced life support (ALS) treatment, and transportation of patients who are ill, injured, and/or need other medical services. Treatment, transportation and transfer of patients will be based upon established policies, procedures and protocols. This position will report to the Chief of the Emergency Medical Service Division.
Work Schedule/Salary Adjustment:
As members of the Reno Fire Department, Paramedics are assigned to a rotating schedule of 48 hours on and 96 hours off. The stated annual salary is based on a 2,080-hour work year and does not include compensation associated with the regularly scheduled overtime required by the assigned schedule. Actual annual earnings are therefore expected to exceed the published salary amount.
We currently have three vacancies in the Reno Fire Department in which hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur.

- Participate in the delivery of emergency and non-emergency medical and health care.
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency medical calls for service and provides life support functions as indicated.
- Drives and operates ambulances and other department vehicles safely, in accordance with established department and emergency driving guidelines.

- Becomes familiar with and maintains medical information in a confidential manner subject to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as per policy.
- Maintain currency of all required certifications and licenses.
- Provide feedback to management for improvement of working conditions, patient care, and system performance.
- Documents and completes all reports, such as: pre-hospital care reports, incident reports, travel information and training and continuing education records as per policy.
- Lifts, carries, and/or pushes patients as needed to move or transfer them to wheelchairs, stretchers, ambulances, or other assistive devices.
- Participates in the transportation of patients to appropriate treatment facility as needed; assists the receiving facility by obtaining, recording, and communicating patients vital statistics and circumstances of the emergency.
- Participates in vehicle, station, and equipment maintenance and cleanup activities; checks assigned vehicle(s) and equipment to ensure response readiness; maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment, and routine vehicle parts.
- Assists staff/employees/others in delivering medical care.
- Must be able to work overtime as required.

The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.
Age and Education:
- Be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
License or Certificate:
- Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
- Possession of current, valid Nevada Paramedic certification or National Registry Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Paramedic certification.
- Must possess a current AHA BLS Provider certification.
- Must possess a current AHA ACLS Provider certification.
- Must possess a current AHA PALS Provider certification.
- Must possess a current ITLS/PHTLS or equivalent certification, or have the ability to obtain one upon hire.
- Ability to obtain a Nevada Ambulance Attendant license.

Employee/Veteran Preference in the Event of Tie Scores:
Open Competitive Examination (Rule VII, Section 7):
In the event of tie scores, candidates will be provided a rank preference in the following order:
1. City of Reno classified employees who are veterans
2. City of Reno classified employees who are not veterans
3. City of Reno non-classified employees and external candidates who are veterans
This preference is only used to break ties. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application.
Promotional Examinations (Rule VIII, Section 7):
If two or more employees earn the same final score (including seniority points), veterans preference will be applied if any of the tied employees have submitted proof of an honorable military discharge. This preference is only used to break ties. If a tie still remains, it will be broken based on seniority in the current classification. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application.

Seniority Credit (Rule VIII, Section 9):
Classified employees of the City of Reno shall receive seniority credit computed by adding to a passing score as follows:
The final ranking will include the applicable seniority points added to the overall grade of the examination process. For each full year of continuous service completed, 0.2 points will be added up to a maximum of ten (10) years... 2 points will be the maximum.
Appointment and Certification:
Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
Certification from a Fire Department promotional list is as follows: if the list contains fifteen (15) names or less, the ten (10) highest scoring eligibles; if the list contains more than fifteen (15) names, the eleven (11) highest scoring available eligibles; if the list contains fewer than ten (10) eligibles, all eligible names shall be submitted. If there is more than one vacancy, one (1) additional name shall be submitted for each vacancy.
Probationary Period:
Certification of Eligibles, Appointments, and Probation (Rule VII, Section 12)
Classified employees who are newly hired, promoted, reclassified, transferred, or who voluntarily demote to a lower position are subject to a probation period.
The only exception is if an employee chooses to voluntarily demote back to the exact job they previously held within 24 months of being promoted.
