RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collect, clean, decontaminate, disinfect, and sterilize surgical instruments, trays, packs, and reusable medical equipment.
- Operate and maintain sterile processing and high-level disinfection equipment safely and efficiently.
- Inspect, assemble, organize, and prepare instrumentation and supplies for surgical procedures.
- Maintain accurate documentation, inventory records, and sterilization logs in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards.
- Assist with department orientation and support special projects or departmental needs as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Current Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) certification required and maintained.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or obtained within 30 days of hire.
- Strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation, sterilization techniques, disinfection practices, and infection control standards.
- Minimum of two years of sterile processing experience in a clinical or hospital setting strongly preferred.
- Ability to maintain detailed documentation, inventory management, and sterilization records accurately.
- Strong communication skills, teamwork, adaptability, and the ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, lift, push, pull, carry, and perform repetitive hand motions throughout the workday.
ENVIRONMENT
The South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22-bed Acute Care Critical Access Hospital and 28-bed Long Term Care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in South-Central Alaska. The hospital features two operating rooms and one endoscopy suite. This position works primarily indoors in a bright, fast-paced sterile processing environment that includes decontamination, clean/sterile workspaces, and endoscopy processing areas. Work schedules may vary based on department and surgical service needs.
Employees in this role may be exposed to infectious diseases, blood-borne pathogens, sharps injuries, heat, chemical cleaning agents, and potential muscle strain associated with repetitive physical tasks.
