Sign-On Bonus:

The Histotechnician is a valued step in UPMCs Laboratory Career Ladder. Final placement will be based on education and experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining, and cover slipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location, including minute biopsy protocols.
  • Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining
  • Ensure all tissues are embedded and cut according to department-specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections, including no folds, chatter, artifacts, or floaters.
  • Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
  • Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area. Maintain instruments in accordance with quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.
  • Supports the academic mission of the department.
  • Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, and stocking supplies. Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to the Histology workflow.
  • Comply with all UPMC and departmental policies, procedures, and work practices.
