Job Summary

This position involves work related to the processing and testing of clinical and research specimens for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease or conditions. Responsibilities include testing specimens for information about the health of a patient, for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease and research programs. May include highly technical sub- specialty areas such as enzyme assay, steroid assay, radioimmunoassay, toxicology, electrophoresis, rheumatology, tissue typing, and virology.

Performs both routine and complex histologic techniques such as enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and immunofluorescence on tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist to diagnose disease. Knowledgeable in the areas of pathology, management, education, and regulations that impact the field of histotechnology.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

Histotechnician (HT) Certificaiton or Scientist in Histotechnology (HTL) Certification from American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification or ability to certify in first 6 months.

Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or related scientific field.

Experience working as a histotechnician in a clinical hospital Histology laboratory setting.

Experience performing routine H&E and a variety of special histochemical stains simultaneously.

In-depth understanding of histology laboratory operations, equipment, instruments reagents and handling tissues.

Ability to follow detailed written protocols and SOPs.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact effectively with diverse groups including faculty, clinicians, students and staff.

Effective and proactive problem solving and decision-making skills.

Ability to work with hazardous materials and chemicals.

Ability to work well under pressure and remain flexible in changing work environment.

Knowledge and ability to operate a personal computer.

Ability to function and work in a diverse work environment

Ability to maintain the security of confidential information, exercise judgement, tact, and discretion in handling sensitive or confidential information and situations.

Organizational and time management skills to independently manage and prioritize an extensive and varied workload, meet multiple deadlines, and achieve timely progress in specimen processing.

Preferred Qualifications

HLT or equivalent certification.

3 years of experience working in a diagnostic histology laboratory including staining, special stains, and immunohistochemistry.

Experience with preparing molar solutions.

Experience performing general histology laboratory maintenance.

At least 3 years of experience in histology laboratory operations, equipment, instruments reagents and handling tissue.

Knowledge of basic chemistry and biology applicable to the surgical pathology laboratory.

Knowledge of hospital and laboratory regulations and requirements (e.g. CDPH, CAP, TJC, NAACLS, OSHA).

Knowledge of the Laboratory and Hospital Information Systems (LIS/HIS) and other basic computer programs.

Ability to recognize processes that could lead to failures.

Ability to perform high-complexity testing.

Department Overview

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a large, diverse, multi-site department whose mission is to be scientific leaders who promote excellence through clinical diagnostics, next generation innovation, collaborative discovery and world class education in service to all communities. UC Davis is leading the way in diagnosing, treating, and ultimately preventing disease. Pathology brings these tools together with education and patient care to transform the field.

The department has over $12 million in external research funding which supports multi-disciplinary research in neuroscience, cancer, computational pathology, and healthcare delivery science. Education is provided at many levels, including highly ranked required courses and electives for medical students, 16-person residency program, 7 fellowships, and participation in graduate programs. Departmental academic operations are conducted within central administrative offices in various locations at the Medical Center in Sacramento and in research space on both the Sacramento and Davis campuses.

Department Specific Job Scope

This position will work primarily in the Center for Diagnostic Innovation, within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Job requirements will include performing routine slide staining, histochemical staining and immunohistochemistry. There will also be opportunities to engage in creative endeavors such as experimenting with new staining techniques, nanostring technology, etc. Incumbent will be expected to continually update knowledge, skills, and abilities by seeking new and advanced histology methods, techniques, and technologies. Will be expected to contribute to the writing and updating of standard operating procedures.
