- This is a civilian position covered by the Arkansas Public Employee Retirement System (APERS).
- Qualified applicants will be sent an assessment to complete prior to being subject to a physical agility test and interviews.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
Under general supervision, to engage in emergency medical services in order to protect life; to operate and maintain medical equipment and apparatus; to provide emergency medical services; to maintain facilities; to perform related work as required.
A Paramedic must respond to medical emergencies and provide advanced life support pre-hospital care to victims of injury or illness. A Paramedic is ordinarily the highest medical authority at an emergency medical scene and as such, makes medical decisions based on standing orders, protocols and orders from on-line and off-line medical directors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs complex diagnostic and medical procedures such as intravenous cannulation, endotracheal intubation, recognition of cardiac arrhythmias and administration of drugs. This duty is performed daily, about 50% of the time.
Comprehends and documents patient histories. This duty is performed daily, about 20% of the time.
Checks drugs and equipment daily to ensure proper control and inventory. This duty is performed daily, about 5% of the time.
Drives and maintain apparatus. This duty is performed daily, about 5% of the time.
Clean and test equipment. This duty is performed daily, about 5% of the time.
Perform basic maintenance of vehicles. This duty is performed weekly, about 5% of the time.
Operate radio-telephone equipment as required. This duty is performed daily, about 10% of the time.
Clean and maintain station facilities and quarters. This duty is performed daily, about 15% of the time.
Explain Fire Department rules, regulations and procedures. This duty is performed monthly, about 5% of the time.
Subject to emergency recall during non-duty hours. This duty is performed annually, about 1% of the time.
Operate fire station computers. This duty is performed daily, about 20% of the time.
Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Knowledge of a specialized field (however acquired), such as basic accounting, computer, etc. Equivalent of four years in high school, plus night, trade extension, or correspondence school specialized training, equal to two years of college, plus 2 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must maintain state-mandated continuing education requirements for Paramedic Certification, including current American Heart Association (AHA) certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or equivalent.

Occasionally responsible for organization's property where carelessness, error, or misappropriation would result in moderate damage or moderate monetary loss to the organization. The total value for the above would range from $5,000 to $150,000.

Probable errors would not likely be detected until they reached another department, office or patron, and would then require considerable time and effort to correct the situation. Frequently, possibility of error that would affect the organization's prestige and relationship with the public to a limited extent, but where succeeding operations or supervision would normally preclude the possibility of a serious situation arising as a result of the error or decision.
