Overview: This role involves coordinating, monitoring, and facilitating technical staff training and competency programs in a laboratory setting, ensuring compliance with OSHA, CLIA, CAP, and organizational policies. The position offers an opportunity to lead and enhance laboratory education within a dynamic healthcare environment serving the Southeastern United States region.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and provide daily oversight of laboratory training and competency programs for all laboratory personnel.
- Review regulatory agency publications and standards, implement necessary changes in collaboration with Quality Assurance staff.
- Develop, conduct, and approve staff training on various laboratory topics.
- Identify and assist with remedial training needs, documenting and coordinating actions with management.
- Maintain comprehensive records of staff training and competency documentation.
- Conduct audits of training and competency processes to ensure compliance.
- Assist in developing evaluation criteria and identifying trends alongside Quality Supervisors, recommending corrective actions as needed.
- Serve as a resource to clarify policies and procedures for staff.
- Support development and validation of laboratory procedures in line with departmental and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare or assist with comprehensive and individual validation plans.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Formal Training:
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science with clinical training across neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult patient testing.
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through ASCP or equivalent credentials required.
Experience:
- Minimum of five years as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
- Preferred experience in quality assurance, training, education, and competency assessment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements including safety, CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, and federal guidelines.
- Ability to investigate and evaluate new methodologies for management approval.
- Effective management and supervisory skills.
- Excellent communication skills, including listening, writing, and speaking.
- Familiarity with developmental models relevant to adolescent and adult patient care to guide staff training.
- Flexibility to work additional hours or shifts as needed.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to operate equipment while sitting or standing.
- Moderate walking, standing, sitting, and lifting.
- Willingness to travel between multiple hospital sites.
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and occasional toxic substances.
- Visual acuity and manual dexterity required.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently or collaboratively.
