Major Duties Include
- Clinical Laborory Scientist works throughout the lab as a generalist and works weekends, holidays and the evening or night shift by themselves when priorities demonstre a need.
- Performs testing procedures on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental sample using manual and automed techniques. Duties require competency in the areas of immunohemology, hemology, chemistry, coagulion, microbiology, serology, special chemistry, and urinalysis.
- Performs, evalue, interprets, and valides laborory results. In all areas, technologist prepares reagents, assembly equipment, and verifies correct instrument operion.
-Performs a broad range of laborory procedures. In Addition, performs advanced complex laborory procedures; recognizes deviion from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles. Recognizes and communices predefined critical results affecting pient care.
- Evalues and solves problems reled to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis taking into account physiological processes and requirements.
- Maintain and documents the optimal functioning of laborory equipment. Uses, calibres, identifies malfunctions, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance of laborory equipment. Diagnoses deviions in test performance due to instrument malfunction.
- Performs an documents quality control and quality assurance activities and corrective actions reled to test performance using stistical principles and theories of performance improvement.
- Adheres to practice and regulions governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace.
- Ensures compliance with rules and regulions of assorted regulory agencies such as College of American Phologist (CAP), The Joint Commission (TJC), American Associion of Blood Banks (AABB), Federal Drugs administrion (FDA) and Occupional Safety and Health Administrion (OSHA). Assist in preparing the lab for regulory and accredition inspections.
- Identifies discrepancies, solve problems, and suggest solutions.
- Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors, which influence test results. Interpret results and suggests follow-up test selection or procedures.
- Evalues and implements new techniques and procedures in the laborory in terms of equipment, method comparison, and establishment of reference intervals.
- Communice effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member. Provides excellent service as defined by the customer (healthcare providers, pients, and others). Gives direction and guidance using underlying principles of laborory testing.
- Organizes work and set priorities to meet deadlines.
- Maintains a professional currency through formal educion and professional training and networking.
- Attends on-site and off-site instrument training schools (completing the expert level course, if offered). Th expertise is then offered to other technical staff by conducting training events, competency testing exercise, review of correct procedures if problems arise and general oversight of instrument operion.

Certificion. Candides must meet one of the certificion options below.
Generalist certificion as an MLS given by ASCP BOC or AMT.
Generalist certificion as an MT given by ASCP BOR or AMT.
Cegorical certificion or Specialist certificion by ASCP or AMT.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfhering Provision as described in the VA Qualificion Standard for this occupion (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupion and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinions : In addition to the basic requirements for employment, candides must meet the following grade-determining criteria for placement:
Experience. 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-9). Examples of specialized experience includes: independently carrying out the day-to-day operions in the laborory. Develop, perform, evalue, interpret, correle, and valide the accuracy of laborory procedures and results in line with current laborory regulory requirements. This work performed may be in a variety of laborory specialties such as chemistry, microbiology, immunology, hemology, and immunohemology.

Educion . Must have 3 full years of progressively higher-level gradue educion or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in medical technology or a directly reled science.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience or educion above, the candide must demonstre the following KSAs:
(a) Knowledge of professional clinical laborory science principles, practices, concepts, and theories th support sound, independent work.
(b) Knowledge of laborory quality control and quality assurance procedures and principles of performance improvement.
(c) Skill in informics, laborory da flow, and laborory processes.
(d) Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumention.
(e) Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laborory results.
(f) Ability to read, interpret, and apply complex written instructions.
(g) Ability to communice, consult, and interact with other members of the health care team, external relions, customer service, and pient educion.

Creditable Experience. To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, and abilities associed with current CLS practices. The experience sisfying this requirement may be paid or non-paid employment as a CLS in the health care field. Research laborory experience does not fulfill this requirement.
Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience is creditable according to its relionship to a full-time workweek. For example, an individual employed 20 hours per week, or on a half-time basis, would receive 1 full-time workweek of credit for each 2 weeks of service.
Quality of Experience. Qualifying experience must be a level comparable to CLS experience the next lower grade level of the position being filled.
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11. The actual grade which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-11.
Physical Requirements: Modere lifting and carrying (15-44 lbs); As needed - Straight pulling, pushing, walking, standing, repeed bending, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required; both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordinion simultaneously;ability to see and distinguish depth perception, basic colors, and shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted). Generalist certificion as an MLS given by ASCP BOC or AMT.
Generalist certificion as an MT given by ASCP BOR or AMT.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfhering Provision as described in the VA Qualificion Standard for this occupion (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupion and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinions : In addition to the basic requirements for employment, candides must meet the following grade-determining criteria for placement:
Experience. 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-9). Examples of specialized experience includes: independently carrying out the day-to-day operions in the laborory. Develop, perform, evalue, interpret, correle, and valide the accuracy of laborory procedures and results in line with current laborory regulory requirements. This work performed may be in a variety of laborory specialties such as chemistry, microbiology, immunology, hemology, and immunohemology.

Educion . Must have 3 full years of progressively higher-level gradue educion or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in medical technology or a directly reled science.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience or educion above, the candide must demonstre the following KSAs:
(a) Knowledge of professional clinical laborory science principles, practices, concepts, and theories th support sound, independent work.
(b) Knowledge of laborory quality control and quality assurance procedures and principles of performance improvement.
(c) Skill in informics, laborory da flow, and laborory processes.
(d) Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumention.
(e) Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laborory results.
(f) Ability to read, interpret, and apply complex written instructions.
(g) Ability to communice, consult, and interact with other members of the health care team, external relions, customer service, and pient educion.

Creditable Experience. To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, and abilities associed with current CLS practices. The experience sisfying this requirement may be paid or non-paid employment as a CLS in the health care field. Research laborory experience does not fulfill this requirement.
Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience is creditable according to its relionship to a full-time workweek. For example, an individual employed 20 hours per week, or on a half-time basis, would receive 1 full-time workweek of credit for each 2 weeks of service.
Quality of Experience. Qualifying experience must be a level comparable to CLS experience the next lower grade level of the position being filled.
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11. The actual grade which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-11.
