The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Technician 1 with the Specimen Processing Services Lab at University of Washington Medical Center Montlake.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Sort and prioritize initial specimens and requests, receive specimens via pneumatic tube system and at the front window

  • Prepare, process, and analyze specimens (blood, urine, tissue, and other body fluids) with accuracy and attention to detail

  • Verify patient identity before performing collection

  • Perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages

  • Match specimens against requisitions for appropriate tube type

  • Centrifuge and aliquot appropriate specimen type and quantity as ordered

  • Process timed urine collections: add preservatives, measure, aliquot, etc.

  • Assist in orientation, training and support of new employees

  • Refer testing to other laboratories as procedurally necessary

  • Respond to inquiries concerning patient lab values, reference ranges, specimen requirements, procedures, time required for tests and preparation of specimens to outside labs for analysis

  • Support senior laboratory technicians and supervisors in research, special projects, or process improvement initiatives

  • Attend division and department staff meetings

  • Promote and contribute to the development of teamwork in the service and working relationships between the laboratory and other departments

  • Complete compliance, safety and other training relevant to job functions as assigned

Work schedule:

  • 100% FTE

  • Sunday Thursday

  • 2:30pm 11:00pm

What youll contribute:

  • At a semi-technical level, perform simple laboratory collection associated with venipunctures and capillary blood collection from patients, testing and/or prepare specimens for laboratory testing and performs other laboratory work which supports the operation of a clinical laboratory.

  • Under general supervision, performs simple and qualitative clinical laboratory tests and/or prepare/setup specimens for laboratory tests and other laboratory work in support of technologists, faculty and students.

  • Primary focus is directed toward pre-analytical handling and processing of patient specimens for diagnostic testing and the collection of blood and samples from patients and the pre-analytical handling and processing of patient specimens for diagnostic testing.

  • Responsible for receiving processing and distribution of routine and stat specimens for analytical testing.

  • Operates laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, incubators, scales and loads specimens onto automated instrumentation (chemistry and hematology automated lines).

  • Participates in performance improvement activities and supports the hospital in meeting JCAHO CLIA and CAP accreditation standards.

  • Communicate courteously and clearly with hospital and laboratory staff to resolve problems. Adhere to directions from leadership team to include CLT Leads.

What youll need:

  • High school graduation or equivalent AND One year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience OR completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
