Job Description

The phlebotomist plays a crucial role in assisting with various tasks, troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements. This position involves specimen collection and storage according to established procedures, ensuring accurate record-keeping and patient data updates.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge specimens.
  • Record maintenance data and conduct decontamination procedures.
  • Update patient information as required.
  • Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Understand and follow all physicians' orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to test order requirements.
  • Check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport.

Essential Skills

  • Specimen collection and phlebotomy skills.
  • Experience with blood draws on all types of patients, including hard sticks and needles.
  • Knowledge of urine and thyroid testing.
  • Proficiency in data entry and computer skills.
  • Phlebotomy certification is required.
  • Experience in hospital, ER, urgent care settings.
  • Strong customer service skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience needed.

Work Environment

The phlebotomist will primarily work in a doctor's office setting and may occasionally work in a patient service center of medium size. The position requires standing for the majority of the shift and involves working both independently and as part of a team with other employees. The role offers training at the beginning of employment and operates during the hours of 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. The expected number of daily draws is between 15-20.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
