Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by completion of college level courses in chemistry or related fields. Experience in conducting chemical and bacteriological laboratory testing; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

License and Certifications: Valid Oklahoma driver's license and satisfactory motor vehicle record. Valid Class "B" Wastewater Lab Tech Certificate from the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment. Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) Wastewater Works Operator Certification desirable.

Knowledge: Modern laboratory techniques, practices, and procedures. Standard wastewater and bio-solids chemical and bacteriological tests. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) regulations. Knowledge of ODEQ reporting procedures is desired.

Skills: Use of laboratory balance, incubator, meters, stills, ovens, furnaces, and related equipment. Performing standard laboratory examinations. Recording data, maintaining records, and compiling reports utilizing a LIMS program, OP10 operations program, and Microsoft Office experience preferred. Following oral and written instructions. Performing QA/QC quarterly testing, EPA DMR QA annual study, and routine QA/QC.

Duties and Responsibilities: Conducts standard and specialized chemical and bacteriological examinations of regular and special samples wastewater and bio-solids. Collects samples of wastewater and bio-solids for water quality analysis. Prepares, maintains, and sets up for specific operation a wide variety of laboratory equipment, apparatus, and supplies. Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment utensils and facilities. Analyzes samples to determine adequacy of treatment, and to discover any foreign substances or materials which may adversely influence the normal physical, chemical, and bacteriological actions occurring in the treatment process. Advises plant operation personnel on the necessary adjustment of treatment mixtures and plant equipment to meet specific results. Prepares samples for shipment to contract labs. Maintains inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies and orders chemicals and equipment for the laboratory as approved by supervisor. Instructs and trains plant operators on routine laboratory analyses. Performs chemical and mathematical calculations and data entry. Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports. Keeps supervisor, operators, and plant managerial staff informed of analytical results and any potential process problems reflected by the test results. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or designated representative.

Working Conditions: Works primarily in a lab environment; however, time is spent (approximately 10% to 15% of the time) exposed to dirt, dust, noise, noxious odors, etc. while working in the treatment plant. Some work will be outdoors. On call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergencies.

Mental and Physical Abilities: Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 80% of the work day. Ability to perform tests at a high level of output. Ability to lift and carry moderately heavy (25-50 lb.) materials frequently. Moderate mobility. Duties are usually performed by combinations of sitting, standing, and walking; however, long periods of standing are required. Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance.
