Conduct routine tests for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, and performs related duties following established standards and practices. Analyzes routine test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits. Establishes, maintains cooperative relationships with patients, physicians, pathologists, staff, and other individuals. Relies on guidelines and education to complete job and works under general supervision.

Patient Experience:

  • Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood or urine, using microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities or diseases.
  • Assist with training of students and new Team Members.
  • Maintain required records, reports, and statistics as needed.
  • Perform specimen processing and technical functions as assigned

  • Assists in care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.
  • Adheres to infection-control policies and protocols, storage procedures, and regulations.
  • Understands specimen requirements for each test and evaluates specimen for proper identification and integrity through visual checks and result evaluation.
  • Ability to recognize discrepant or unexpected test results, correlating data and monitoring results for reasonableness. Includes troubleshooting and documentation.
  • Follows protocol for instrument maintenance, running controls and accepting, verifying and recording QC results.
  • Recognizes and refers problems and questions outside of own expertise to appropriate supervisory personnel.

  • Interacts with clients, patients, physicians and other hospital personnel to maintain good customer relations and quality health care.

  • Acts as a mentor in the training of students and new employees while fostering interest and knowledge.

  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technical program or Associates Degree.

  • Must be able to successfully pass ASCP Certification test within 6 months of hire or equivalent certification.

  • Failure to pass will result in termination of employment.
