Job Description

The MT/MLT personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and for reporting test results, and should only perform those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and that are within the individual’s skill level as determined by education, training or experience, and technical abilities.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Perform patient testing in all areas of the laboratory including hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, serology services, and phlebotomy; perform routine and specialized tests: analyze and report test results and consult with providers.
  2. Perform and evaluate quality control; perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and computer input; print and/or process patient reports; assist in inventory control and maintenance; evaluate and select reagents and supplies; perform proper cleaning and disinfecting procedures.
  3. Provide technical phone support for offsite providers, clinicians and reference laboratories; file a variety of records, reports, films, etc.
  4. Participate in laboratory quality assurance; complete and submit a variety of reports; maintain records in compliance with professional, federal and other applicable guidelines; maintain compliance with all accrediting agencies.
  5. Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining record of patient results.
  6. Maintain records that which demonstrates that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
  7. Adhere to the laboratories quality control policies and documenting all QC activities, instrument and procedural collaborations, and instrument maintenance.
  8. Follow the laboratories policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established levels of performance.
  9. Be able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or notify the appropriate supervisor.
  10. Document appropriate corrective action when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance and specifications.
  11. Only perform moderate complexity testing under the appropriate direct supervision of a general supervisor, if required by personnel qualification requirements.
  12. Adheres to and promotes compliance with applicable laws, safety codes, employee handbook, Vehicle Use Maintenance Manual, Finance Manual and department policies and procedures.
  13. Must have a positive work history; responsible for maintaining a consistent and regular attendance record.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

MLT or MLS training with certification/registration as determined by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT) is required. One (1) year of previous laboratory experience (one year of student clinical rotation in Medical Technologist degree program may be considered). Bachelors of Science and MT Certification preferred. Training and certification in medical laboratory science required, must meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) standards for a Moderate Complexity Testing laboratory, non-waived testing. Knowledge of current laboratory standards and trends in lab practice. Must possess the ability to work independently, have excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and be computer literate.  Knowledge of history, culture and health need of Native American communities preferred.  Requires the ability to pass an extensive background check and pre-employment drug screening.  Requires a valid driver’s license with the ability to be insured under the Tribe’s policy.  Tribal Preference applies.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must pass background check. Work is performed indoors in a clinical setting. Requires standing, walking, sitting, bending and stooping for long periods of time and traveling to field health clinics. May be required to lift up to 15 pounds. This work involves regular and recurring exposure to contagious diseases, caustic reagents, and x-rays. Special Safety precautions and protecting clothing and gear, such as safety glasses, protective coat and gloves are often required.
