Conducts a variety of laboratory tests and duties according to established laboratory procedure, and in compliance with Cherokee Nation Policies and Procedures, Rural Health Guidelines and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA '88), and Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA) regulations, while working under the supervision of a Laboratory Supervisor and/or Laboratory Director. Responsibilities: Collects laboratory specimens such as urine, blood, etc., and ensures these specimens are collected at the proper time and patients have received proper instructions and/or preparation. Determines adequacy, identification and appropriateness of specimens according to test procedure and the laboratory's specimen acceptance/rejection criteria. Performs specimen testing and prepares specimens appropriately according to test procedure being performed. Maintains integrity of specimens. Performs and documents quality control. Resolves technical problems and takes remedial actions whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. Must obtain CPR certification within six months of employment and maintain throughout employment period. Under the direction of a pathologist or a qualified medical professional, prepares human tissue and bodily fluid specimens by treating the specimens with chemicals, slicing and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis by the pathologist. Preparation process may include sectioning, reagent and other treatment, slide placement, and dying. Places specimens using fixation, dehydration, clearing and/or impregnation by embedding, in a suitable media. Uses judgment to adapt for tissue types, uses chemicals and dyes to stain sections in order to demonstrate various pathological conditions. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: ? Performs specimen collection, accessioning, and logging routines ? May be responsible to make scheduled rounds within the facility to pick up surgical specimens. ? Checks each specimen for criteria of acceptability, assuring proper patient identification, specimen integrity and appropriate paperwork. ? Records the receipt of specimens and assigns identification number according to department and/or facility protocol ? Refers any problem specimen to the area of collection and informs the supervisor ? Assists pathologists with tissue grossing procedures; prepares the tissue grossing area ? Maintains and assures specimen identification by correctly labeling cassettes and maintains workflow in concert with the pathologist. ? Cleans the workstation after completing grossing procedures. Ensures aseptic techniques and observes health safety protocols during cleanup to minimize exposure risks. ? Processes, embeds and sections tissues for slides; ? Embeds processed tissue, cuts embedded tissue for slide sections; performs routine and special stains according to department procedures in preparation for analysis by the pathologist. ? May prepare frozen-section slides for frozen section diagnosis by the pathologist. ? Routinely conducts highly specialized histochemical and histo-pathological laboratory tests for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease; records test results for review by physicians. ? Prepares and maintains equipment used for all types of tissue processing, embedding, cutting and mounting, labeling, recording and verifying the quality of slides delivered to pathologist. ? Set-up equipment, instruments and apparatus for specific laboratory procedures. ? May perform preventive maintenance and quality control procedures on the lab equipment. ? May provide technical assistance and training to laboratory personnel as required. ? Observes all facility and laboratory policies and safety practices; maintains a safe, clean and prepared work area. ? Adheres to worksite rules, policies and procedures. ? Other duties as assigned Minimum Requirements: ? Certification as a Histotechnologist, HTL (ASCP or equivalent) and/or per state requirements preferred. ? Completion of a CAHEA accredited histotechnology program; or Associate's Degree preferred. ? One year of experience in histopathology strongly preferred. ? Successful completion of testing process. ? Successful completion of background screening and hiring process. ? Must meet all of pre-employment screening requirements. ? Current physical exam per state or contract regulations. ? Current TB test or chest x-ray. Physical/Work Environment Requirements: ? Position requires the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc. ?
