The incumbent will perform the day-to-day services of the neurodiagnostic lab except those that are the specific responsibility of the Neurologist in charge. The duties will be assigned by the neurodiagnostic laboratory manager (a senior EEG technician). Duties include, but are not limited to, preparing patients for tests, performing electroencephalogram, polysomnography, evoked potentials, nerve conduction, and intraoperative studies. Technologist will help to manage the video EEG long-term monitoring unit to include patient preparation, video and EEG archiving, and maintenance of patient electrodes. Incumbent will prepare test reports for the Neurologist's approval, will prepare monthly reports of tests performed, and maintain patient data base. Additionally, technologist will order supplies, schedule outpatient and inpatient appointments, mail appointment forms, maintain computerized scheduling calendar and receive patients. The incumbent is responsible for managing the clinical neurophysiologic data bank by creating, editing and updating computer files, including files containing digitized test results. STG International is in an active bidding process for this position and position availability is contingent upon STG International, Inc. being awarded the contract. The contract award is scheduled to be announced on/around August or September 2010. This task order is for the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) initiative under the Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (PHTBI) program. The program seeks to address gaps in the care available for the prevalent injuries among combatants from the global war on terrorism. Through adoption of risk based staffing models and a uniform, best practice standard of care across DOD, the program seeks to ensure easy, rapid access to PH and TBI care for all beneficiaries and to ensure that transition across networks of care recognizes the unique care coordination and case management requirements for PH and TBI patients. Scheduling and Duty Hours. The Department Head or designated representative of the assigned clinical unit will coordinate the duty schedule of all active duty, Government, and contract health care workers to ensure adequate coverage of all clinic operating hours. The specific schedule for each health care worker for each 2-week period will be scheduled 45 days in advance. Shifts will generally be scheduled for 8.5 hour shifts, inclusive of a 30-minute uncompensated meal break. The HCW is required to provide services Monday through Friday between the hours of 0700 and 1700. The health care worker shall accrue 8 hours of personal leave (annual plus sick) for each 80 hours (on-site and in a leave status) worked. Job responsibilities will include the following: Perform a full range of electroencephalography (EEG) studies as needed. Monitor one patient on video EEG seizure monitoring. The caseload includes scheduled and unscheduled requirements for care. Recognize sleep apnea, sleep movements, nocturnal seizures, and parasomnias, such as nocturnal myoclonus and REM behavior disorder, and make adjustments in recording parameters to optimize performance of the EEG study. Perform brain death EEGs in accordance with American EEG Society Standards. Manage medical emergencies and prepare a descriptive report of recorded activity for the interpreting physician. Perform operator maintenance of EEG equipment, e.g., disassemble machine, clean and oil parts and make repairs or replace parts as required. Clean and sterilize electrodes and other necessary equipment. Review patient records for contributing, complicating or other medical conditions pertinent to the performance of EEGs. Explain procedures and position the patient to insure patient comfort for optimal recording of EEGs. Anticipate and correct factors related to patient discomfort, mechanical and electrical interference and artifacts. Scan and examine the recording environment to detect and eliminate possible source of artifacts and recognize artifacts as they occur in the EEG in real time. Work rapidly to diagnose and eliminate artifacts in order to preserve the integrity of the recording. Employ clean techniques when conducting EEG procedures in the neonatal nursery or ICU. Select from a wide variety of electrodes and determine the best suited for each individual case situation. Recognize artifacts, patient movements and electroencephalographic findings and make changes in recording techniques and parameters to optimize display of the phenomenon in question. Distinguish artifactual and cerebral sources of electroencephalographic findings. Recognize and respond calmly and appropriately in emergency situations. Promote self care and assist in the dissemination of information to patients regarding discharge instructions, health promotion, disease prevention and wellness, and available community resources, as outline in clinic/unit education program. Participate in patient care conference and provide input for planning treatment plans. Utilize available resources to assure patient access, problem resolution, and patient satisfaction in the delivery of nursing care. Make follow-up contact with patient as directed by credentialed provider. Prepare laboratory, radiology requests and other forms as ordered by providers. Input and retrieve information through the use of various computerized information systems and perform end of day computer processing of information. Participate in monthly clinic/unit meetings to review and evaluate the care provided to patients, identify opportunities to improve the care delivered, and recommend corrective action when problems exist.
