Major Duties: The incumbent assists professional anesthesia personnel with duties within the operating room suite or anywhere in the hospital where the services of an anesthesiologist are needed and where the assistance of a technician is essential to provide necessary equipment and drugs.  He/she assists the anesthesiologist with patient care; assists with positioning patients under regional or general anesthesia procedures; prepares designated solution setup for starting an IV; assists with placement of diasyst stethoscopes and blood pressure cuffs on patients; performs routine maintenance and repair of equipment within the capability of the anesthesia technician section; performs laboratory test in the operating room; assists in research, educational and quality management.  The incumbent will check all dated supplies and resuscitative equipment and the replacement of nitrous oxide and oxygen cylinders.  They will be familiar with daily and weekly cleaning procedures for machines and anesthesia carts and storage areas as outlined in detail in the procedural manual.  They will be familiar with the numerous electronic monitoring instruments, including QC and Calibrations, know which units have replaceable batteries, know how to change the batteries and be familiar with sterilization procedures.  Qualifications: Qualifications:  GS-4:  Six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience or two years above high school with courses related to the occupation.  GS-5:  One year of special- ized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level or a four year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation.  GS-6:  One year of specialized ex- perience equivalent to the GS-5 level.  GS-7:  One year of specialized experience at the GS-6 level.  GS-8:  One year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level.  General experience is any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that pro- vided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.  Specialized experience is experience in the operation of equipment and systems relating to Anesthesiology.  For grades GS-8 and above anesthesia technician certification through the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) is highly desirable.  Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. All applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the duties of the position.   English Language Proficiency.  Applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407 (d). Education: There is no specific educational requirements for this occupation.  Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 level. You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position. You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position. You will be evaluated based upon the question responses you provide during a structured interview.
